Left Out in the Cold

From 2009

As I was looking through all the stories on AOL and Yahoo, as I always do, I came upon a story that really got me thinking.

Even if you are not a basketball fan, or even hate it, you know who the greatest player of all time is. That’s right, Michael Jordan, obviously.

Michael has two sons, who both play basketball. No No, they are not the next coming of Michael from what I hear, but they do have a little bit of game. Game enough to earn a scholarship to play college basketball.

Today, Marcus Jordan has chosen his school, Central Florida. Like I said, he is not his dad, so North Carolina or another big school was not calling, even though a lot of schools were interested in Marcus. Congrats Marcus.

Now, here is where I got the problem with the story. Scholarships are not handed out to everyone. Schools also only got so many to hand out period. We also know that it cost LOTS of money to go to school for four or more years. College is one expensive thing to attend. Getting a scholarship helps out students who otherwise might not be able to afford to go otherwise.

So here’s my question. Does Marcus really need this scholarship? Should maybe Michael, his father, agree to pay for his college and free up that scholarship for someone who NEEDS it? The man is worth hundreds of millions, and will continue to be long past when he’s gone.

In no way am I saying Marcus did not earn it, either thru bball or grades. But, when someone’s that wealthy, I believe giving it to someone in more need of it would be the right thing to do. I think Michael should step up and offer to pay for Marcus and grant that scholarship to someone else.

While athletes make millions, and so do movie stars, many people struggle to get by. Also, many occupations that deserve the millions, like firefighters and teachers for example, barely make good pay. I understand a pro team brings in more revenue than a fire station or a school, so I understand the ability to pay more and am fine with that. But it’s time to give back, and TRICKLE some down to these professions. I was using an Obama reference, to funny.

Anyway, this is just another example of a travesty in my opinion. Another person left out in the cold when the wealthy get all the breaks. Like I said, I do not doubt Marcus's accomplishments, or sayings he’s not deserving. But by Michael not waving the scholarship for his son and paying for it, that’s one more GREAT student, or GREAT athlete with no means to go to college who is going to miss out on a GREAT opportunity.

Michael, do the right thing, pay for Marcus. Or, to not take away from him, open a scholarship under your name for that school, for at least these 4 years. That would show some class and caring, and I believe you have that. Don’t let another promising young student not get their chance to shine. You got yours, now give them theirs.
